One of the forms of power that affects interpersonal conflict is coercive power, "power that derives from the ability to punish" (Floyd, 2011, p. 366). In episode six of the third season, Marie Laveau shows her coercive power over Hank Foxx. We learn that Hank has been hired by Marie to kill all of the decedents of Salem. Hank, coming from a family of witch hunters, has married one of the witches to help him track down and kill various witches. | (Ahsgifs, 2014) |
Marie becomes concerned that Hank's marriage to Cordelia is making him "soft" and preventing him from properly doing what she's hired him to do. She confronts Hank, essentially telling him that if he doesn't kill every single witch in the house, she's going to kill him (Petrie & Uppendahl 2013). While Marie and Hank are interdependent, Marie has more power than Hank. She speaks largely in one-up messages expressing her dominance, which "often take the form of commands" (Floyd, 2011, p. 364).
"No more nonsense. You go back there and you bring me their heads. All of them. Fiona, her daughter, and every witch bitch in that house. You bring me their heads, all of them, then you burn that place to the ground. You do it, and you do it quick, and I let you live," Marie says (Petrie & Uppendahl 2013).
