While American Horror Story is no stranger to profanity (in fact, a compilation video of all of the times the word "shit" was said circulated after the first season), no character is remembered for iconic and quotable uses of profanity like American Horror Story: Coven's Madison Montgomery. In the chapter, profanity is defined as "a form of language considered vulgar, rude, or obscene in the context in which it is used" (Floyd, 2011, p. 165).
(Nicoleholtan) | And indeed, Madison's intention is clearly to offend. For example, one scene in episode 13 of the third season finds Madison failing at one of the Seven Wonders, the test that reveals who the new Supreme will be, or the most powerful witch in charge of the coven. Instead of proving herself another way or asking to try again, Madison goes with, "Either crown me, or kiss my ass" (Petrie & Gomez-Rejon, 2013). |
Profanity is not limited to curse words, however, and neither is Madison's extensive list of quotable moments. As Some forms of profanity "describe sexual acts or refer to people's sexual organs or bodily functions" (Floyd, 2011, p. 165). In season 3, episode 3, when a new neighbor with extreme religious beliefs tells Madison that she doesn't want her near her son, Madison strikes back with a comment about the son's abstinence (Wong & Gomez-Rejon, 2013). | (realitytvgifs) |
Madison's dialogue is very much for comic relief and it's reasonable to assume that no one in the real world would treat others and speak as Madison does. However, if someone did, it's likely that the situation would not end in laughs by any means. While we can laugh at, "It's too hot! My frickin' vagina's sweating!" we wouldn't likely laugh as much if we heard someone we just met use that kind of language.
